Robert and David in Manchester

24 Feb 2017 12:01:00

Robert Falconer TaylorWe're just home after two superb days in Manchester.  Once again we were made very welcome by the Dogs Trust staff at their excellent facility in Denton and were treated to two fabulous seminars by our speakers Robert Falconer-Taylor and David Ryan.

It was the first time we had hosted Robert but already can't wait for the next time.  Presenting the topic of emotions in dogs, Robert gave us a fascinating insight into the workings of the dog's brain and the implications that information has on training methods and the use of any medication to help with behaviour problems.  It is a complex area but Robert was able to give the science and explain everything in laymans terms too and held our attention throughout.  Invaluable information for anyone, be they dog enthusiast or professional.

Having hosted David before, we knew we were in for a treat.  His topic was on dogs that bite and fight. David, another engaging speaker, gave us helpful information on how to tackle aggression problems and prevent them starting in the first place but also presented a wealth of information on where these problems stem from and plenty of statistics to support his findings.

Thank you gentlemen.

Chirag's seminar great success

20 Jan 2017 19:32:32

Chirag bucket game

Chirag's "Empowering the Canine Learner" seminar went really well with our speaker receiving 5/5 from every feedback form! Kody was on hand to demonstrate 'The Bucket Game' and everyone seemed to leave with many plans for what they would be working on with their own dogs / classes when they got home!

Platforms and filmwork

31 Oct 2016 22:48:50

While already gearing up to next year's events, it's great to go out on a high with this years.

Platform Training with Kay Attwood was a big success.  All attendees reported back that they'd learned a lot and those with working places took home some very sleepy canines. Thanks to Kay for a very enjoyable event and looking forward to her Cognitive Skills seminar already.

Thanks, too, to Sally, our "in-house" trainer for another fab filmwork seminar.  Places on these ever-popular events sell like hotcakes and rightly so.

Calling all Haqihana lovers!

20 Oct 2016 15:20:53

We have a brand new area on our website.  Thanks to the brilliant suggestion of one of our customers we now have a page where owners can show pictures of their dogs proudly sporting their Haqihana harness.  It's a great way of showing how different colours look on different coats and an opportunity for customers to add a few words if they'd like to.  The said helpful customer has even got the ball rolling by sending in the first two contributions to this area here.

The more pictures we can add, the more useful it would be so if you'd like to contribute your picture, please send it to info@dog-and-bone.co.uk.  You don't need to include your name or the name of your dog - it's entirely up to you.

12 Oct 2016 10:54:14

We're thrilled to announce lots of exciting new seminars.  We're very much looking forward to Platform Training with Kay Attwood on 26th October and another fun Filmwork seminar on 27th.  But we have a great line up in place already for next year, too:

Chirag Patel demonstrates Giving Dog Training Back to the Dogs: Empowering the Canine Learner

David Ryan helps us with Dogs that Bite and Fight

Kay Attwood offer us a Cognitive Skills workshop with Kay Atwood - 2 day event

and Daniel Mills helps us to understand  The human-dog relationship and separation anxiety

But we're not resting on our laurels.  We're currently in the process of finalising plans with: Nando Brown, Jane Killion, Brenda Aloff, Ian Dunbar and more.

Make sure you're on the mailing list!

Do As I Do

12 Oct 2016 10:43:51

What a fantastic 4 days it has been with Claudia and Sara teaching us about Do As I Do, a training technique based on a dog's natural ability to imitate.  This is the second time we have hosted Claudia and we're looking forward to the next time already. Despite Claudia being able to provide all the scientific evidence to explain why the technique should work, it seems almost like magic when you see a dog literally copying the actions of a person. It's amazing what dogs are capable of.

New Books

19 Aug 2016 17:43:17

One of the many nice things about being lucky enough to hear all our wonderful speakers is the helpful information you can pick up.

We often hear books recommended so we've taken the plunge and brought some new titles for you to enjoy:

We now have the new and improved Behaviour Adjustment Training book from Grisha Stewart (BAT) version 2.0 with some fantastic advice on dealing with fear, frustration and aggression in dogs.

Patricia McConnel offers advice on helping dogs to conquer their fears in The Cautious Canine and, together with Karen London, tells us how to manage and enjoy a multi-dog household in Feeling Outnumbered.

Pamela Reid, the author of Excel-erated Learning, offers 40 essays on her work with animals in Dog Insight - something Ian Dunbar has described as "a MUST read for all dog owners".

...and finally

For the serious professional behaviourist we have James O'Heare's comprehensive technical manual on Aggressive Behaviour in Dogs.

Enjoy!
