Do As I Do

by Claudia Fugazza

This 5 Disc set is a lightly edited version of Claudia's 2 day seminar, showing both the theory and the practical with a number of dogs. During the 8hrs and 19 mins running time, you see the dogs start to get the idea of the technique. Claudia clearly explains when 'human error' is affecting training and how to make changes to keep training on track.

"Social learning" means acquiring new behaviours from the observation of others. Recent studies revealed the social cognitive abilities of dogs and demonstrated that they are surprisingly predisposed to learn socially from humans.

"Do as I Do" is a new training method based on dogs' social cognitive skills, particularly on their imitative ability. With this training technique, dogs can learn new behaviours from observing and imitating their owners.

During the seminar, Claudia describes how to teach dogs the "imitation rule" and how to progress through the training protocol. Firstly, Claudia shows how dogs can be taught to imitate a small set of familiar actions (actions already trained with traditional techniques).  She goes on to show how this rule can be generalised. At the end of the training protocol, owners will be able to teach new behaviours to their dogs, simply by showing them what to do. These new actions can then be put under verbal cues.

The cognitive abilities implied in social learning and in this training method are also described.
