Step Up to the Mark! Platform Training for Foundation and Beginners

by Kay Attwood

What is a platform and what is platform training? Well, it's certainly not a NEW training technique and has been used in circuses etc for many years with lions, elephants, sea lions etc as a "docking station" for an animal whilst not "in use".

A platform is a raised surface for the dog to stand on (or sit or lie down depending on the type of platform in use). It can be a great tool for teaching skills from foundation to advanced and beyond! In platform training there are typically multiple types of platform and each type serves a different purpose, making platforms an extremely versatile training tool.  Dogs become magnetised to the platforms and soon want to get on and stay on them!  They quickly make positive associations, because platforms are rewarding and lots of FUN!

With platforms you can shape a variety of behaviours, plus they present the perfect avenues for your dog to offer behaviours, making your dog think in a partnership with the handler.  An added benefit is that it enables working at a distance far quicker than many other methods and/or equipment.

Platforms used effectively can help your dog learn precise positions and master new behaviours far more effectively than usual training techniques.

When you train your dog to go to a correctly sized platform, the dog learns to stand on it in the perfect position which means no more wonky heel and close positions and far more precision on movement and understanding from your dog.

With platforms, you and your dog will learn:

  • Basic Positions
  • Cues to positions
  • Distance Skills
  • Impulse Control
  • Improved focus
  • Improved Drive
  • Improved Precision
  • Stay Work
  • Multi Platforms
  • Body Cues
  • Movement Fluidity
  • Lots of fun!

Running time: 40 mins

What people say:

" Kay, I have to congratulate you on the Foundation Platform Training DVD, absolutely the best of the many that I have bought over the years. I have it running while we practice, lots of real dogs and owners and tips for when it goes wrong" (Sue)

Kay Attwood

Kay AttwoodI was born in 1964 and I have always had two loves in my life - dogs and singing. I live in Frimley, Surrey and I went to school and grew up in Aldershot, Hampshire. I still sing in residential homes regularly as a hobby and also sing at private functions.

I have 2 dogs of my own, Gibson, a Jack Russell cross Basenji, and Flynn a Jack Russell cross Collie. They both have lots of character and I adore them for it!

I love working with dogs and studying their behaviour. I try to attend as many seminars, workshops and conferences up and down the country and have attended many from the worlds leading trainers.

I use only force-free methods to train your dog, involving no pressure, pain or intimidation and I adhere to a strict Code of Conduct at all times.
