- Making the most of your dog training classes

- Shaping skills

Saturday 7th July 2018 - Making the most of your dog training class.

You may be a great dog trainer but if you’re running your own class, you have far more difficult subjects than dogs to train, you have people! Running a successful class means that you not only have good information but that you present it in a way that is clear and logical.  Even more importantly, you find ways to motivate people to put in the time and effort to carry out the training outside the classroom.

In this one-day seminar, Kamal Fernandez shares with us the tips that he has picked up in his 20 years of experience in dog training to achieve just that.

Subjects include:

- structuring classes effectively

- syllabus content

- games to motivate owners

- games to teach foundation for competition

- course structure

- class delivery and presentation

Sunday 8th July 2018 - Shaping Skills.

Are you interested in understanding "shaping" better and how to teach your dog the concepts of shaping? This seminar goes through how to shape behaviour, what to show and how to plan a "shaping" session.  It also covers other elements a dog needs for this training, such as dealing with failure and frustration, variable schedules of reinforcement, labelling cues, what the click actually means and much more. Enhance and improve your understanding of shaping behaviour with any dog.

There will be dogs used during the seminar, however these will be demo dogs, there are no 'working' places at this event.

Saturday 7th July 2018 - Making Your Classes Fun and Effective - 9:30am arrival for 10am start, 5pm finish.

Sunday 8th July 2018 - Shaping Skills - 9:30am arrival for 10am start, 5pm finish.

Hampstead Norreys Village Hall, Newbury Hill, Hampstead Norreys RG18 0TR

An optional sandwich buffet lunch is available at £7 per person per day, payable on the day. We will be in touch with all attendees a few weeks before the event to ask if you would like this.

Please Note: This is a lecture rather than a practical workshop so only assistance dogs will be allowed in the venue. Dogs may be left in vehicles if they are suitable for theweather conditions and they can be exercised on the small grassed area outside but it is essential that you clean up after them. We ask owners to attend to any dogs who are being noisy. Ticket prices cannot be refunded if you have to leave the seminar to attend to distressed dogs.

Kamal Fernandez

Kamal FernandezHead trainer and owner of East London Dog Training, Kamal Fernandez, has over 20 years of experience in training dogs from all walks of life. His current dogs include two Belgian Malinois, two Border Collies, a German Spitz and a Boxer. His own dog training journey began in the very hall in which he now runs his own classes.

As an internationally renowned seminar instructor, Kamal has been invited to teach in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Belgium and Germany, amongst many others. Kamal’s other career highlights include being an Championship Obedience judge and Crufts competitor.

Kamal started training in 1991 after getting Scrunch, an independent free-willed Chow-Chow mix. Like many other first time dog owners, Kamal found himself in for a rude awakening when he got her…Lassie she most definitely was not! You name it, Scrunch did it – running away, biting, resource guarding, nervous aggression!

But, if nothing else, she prompted a trip to Newham Dog Training Club at Eastlea School. And so began an epic journey into the world of dog training which has taken him from a dog that wouldn’t come back when she was called, to competing in the Obedience Championship at Crufts!

Since this humble start, Kamal has immersed himself in the world of animal training, led by some of the leading ‘lights’ in the field such as Sylvia Bishop, Susan Garrett, Bob Bailey, Ian Dunbar and Karen Pryor.

This thirst for knowledge combined with his job as a police officer, working with young offenders and studying psychology has contributed to his dynamic and innovative teaching style and his ability to get the best from his pupils, be they human or canine!
