More information

Over the past decade, there have been numerous, creative innovations for training dogs that are over-excited, hyperactive, anxious, fearful, reactive, or just plain distracted and so, often 'blow-off' food rewards.

Anxiety, Stress, Fear and Reactivity (day 1) are all extreme quality-of-life-destroying afflictions for many dogs and their people. Preventing these utterly predictable problems in puppyhood is quick, easy, highly effective, and downright enjoyable. For the resolution of adult temperament problems, the goal is to raise a dog's 'tolerance-threshold' via classical conditioning, i.e., to change the dog's perceptions and feelings towards people to indirectly change their behaviour towards people. However, resolution is notoriously complicated, not always successful, stressful for dogs, worrisome for trainers, and extremely time-consuming, especially when relying on the 'same-old-same-old' food reward over and over.

Lengthy resolution protocols are simply not a humane option. The dogs are already stressed to the gills and have been for months, or years. Consequently, we must accelerate the process by directly changing dogs' behaviour to change their feelings and emotions more quickly. For example, when dogs are sitting still, or lying down, and not barking, they feel calmer and more confident. You can seriously help your dog to overcome their fears and terrors by instructing them HOW TO ACT when stressed, i.e., to "Sit-Stay-Watch" and "Shush".

Crucial Practical Concepts in Dog Training (day 2) The above is so simple (in theory) but challenging to implement in practice without substantially more-powerful training techniques. The secret to success is learning how to get your dog to engage with you and follow your instructions when they are hopelessly distracted, worked up, and focused on scary aspects of the environment.

  • Helping your dog requires some ingenious training tools and cutting-edge concepts: Understanding the true super-powers of Positive Reinforcement for teaching cued-Responses and objectively testing their varying reliability in a multitude of distracting settings
  • Phasing out reliance on ALL training tools (especially food)
  • Learning how to use Life Rewards to 'power-up' PRAISE (a primary reinforcer) as the most powerful secondary reinforcer on the planet, like a 'click on steroids'!
  • Most important — the secret sauce — you must familiarize yourself with a variety of very simple yet extremely effective troubleshooting and proofing exercises to teach your dog to respond to your verbal instructions and guidance, anytime, anywhere, and no matter what is going on.
