Truffle Hunting with Andrea Misto

Truffles are the fruiting body of a subterranean fungus. They grow in forests across the UK and Europe.  Some species are highly prized as food and have been called "the diamond of the kitchen". Because truffles are underground, they are often found with the help of animals. Pigs have traditionally been used, but it is possible to train dogs to detect this elusive product. Some people then sell the truffles on to restaurants.

This seminar is open to everyone, no matter how much experience you have with dogs and scent work. During the day, Andrea will show people how to teach their dog to become a truffle hunting dog.  It is intended to equip you with the skills and knowledge you will need to complete the training which you can practise after the event.  In general, completing the training is likely to take anything from from 2 weeks to 3 months to achieve depending on how much time is devoted to it.

The day will cover:

- How does a dog smell?

- What is a truffle?

- Where do we find truffles?

- Myths, legends and bar chat.

- Truffle hunting tools

- Different techniques of imprinting an odour

- How to train a truffle dog

- How to teach your dog to fail

- How to read the dog's body language during truffle hunting.

"Truffle hunting kits" should be on sale at the event, so you can leave with everything you need to start training your own dog.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Can I bring my dog?
A. This is a seminar with pre-arranged demonstration dogs. Only registered assistance dogs will be permitted inside the venue beyond those who are working. Assistance dogs must not distract the dogs who are working, otherwise we might need to ask someone to stand with them at the back or temporarily just outside.

Q. I have a specific question, can I contact you?
A. Yes, send an e-mail to info@dog-and-bone.co.uk or phone us on the number at the bottom of this page. Leave a message on the answerphone, if necessary, and someone will get back to you.

Q:  Are there discounts for groups, students or rescue organisations?
A. Discounts are available for Charity workers and volunteers, students and Naturally Happy Dogs members. Contact us for the code to use at the checkout. Charity worker/volunteer or student evidence will be required either in advance or on the door.

Q:  If I can’t come, can someone else come in my place?
A: Yes, that’s perfectly fine, we’d just need their name and contact details. If we receive this less than 48 hours before the event then we will not be able to provide a replacement certificate.

Q:  Will I receive a certificate of attendance?
A: Yes, all attendees receive a certificate of attendance which can be used as evidence of CPD.

Q: Will I receive a printed ticket?
