Empowering the Canine Learner

30 Mar 2017 14:47:00

Chirag seminarWe had a fab time with Chirag on Tuesday where a packed room learned about how we can empower our canine learners and give them choice throughout training.

The 'bucket game' was as popular as ever, and we had some really lovely comments on our feedback forms.

Yoga and Fireworks

27 Mar 2017 14:23:14

Thanks to Toni Shelbourne for an interesting day of diverse topics.

Real Dog Yoga was something we at Dog and Bone knew little about so were interested to see how it worked in practise.  Toni explained how to set up the environment to create the right learning experience for the dog and took some of the handlers through a few of the yoga moves to give a flavour of the activity.  The dogs all seemed pretty chilled by the end of the morning.

Toni also had some very useful information on what to do if your dog is afraid of fireworks.  In this afternoon seminar she went through suggestions for both training and using calming aids such as TTouch, sound and scent therapy.  An enjoyable talk with practical advice.

First Five Do As I Do Dogs

27 Mar 2017 14:12:07

Thanks to Sara Tagliati for two superb days of Do As I Do.  She not only introduced owners new to Do As I Do to the protocols so that they could begin to train their dogs but put dogs with more experience of the technique through their paces with a Do As I Do test.  All 5 entrants were successful despite rigorous criteria and can proudly claim to be the first officially qualified Do As I Do dogs in the UK.  My favorite part of the event was seeing the power of this training technique in action when Sara showed how a new behaviour could be taught and put on cue in seconds, a cue that was still retained hours later.

Fantastic!

Denise Fenzi

13 Mar 2017 16:56:33

We're very excited to be hosting Denise Fenzi in November.  The announcement immediately generated lots of excitement and we're so looking forward to learning what Denise can teach us about motivation, particularly for dog sports.  We're at two great venues, too.  One is Forest Oak Farm down in Gloucester and the other is the IABTC venue in Doncaster.

Hope you can join us.

Robert and David in Manchester

24 Feb 2017 12:01:00

Robert Falconer TaylorWe're just home after two superb days in Manchester.  Once again we were made very welcome by the Dogs Trust staff at their excellent facility in Denton and were treated to two fabulous seminars by our speakers Robert Falconer-Taylor and David Ryan.

It was the first time we had hosted Robert but already can't wait for the next time.  Presenting the topic of emotions in dogs, Robert gave us a fascinating insight into the workings of the dog's brain and the implications that information has on training methods and the use of any medication to help with behaviour problems.  It is a complex area but Robert was able to give the science and explain everything in laymans terms too and held our attention throughout.  Invaluable information for anyone, be they dog enthusiast or professional.

Having hosted David before, we knew we were in for a treat.  His topic was on dogs that bite and fight. David, another engaging speaker, gave us helpful information on how to tackle aggression problems and prevent them starting in the first place but also presented a wealth of information on where these problems stem from and plenty of statistics to support his findings.

Thank you gentlemen.

Chirag's seminar great success

Chirag bucket game

Chirag's "Empowering the Canine Learner" seminar went really well with our speaker receiving 5/5 from every feedback form! Kody was on hand to demonstrate 'The Bucket Game' and everyone seemed to leave with many plans for what they would be working on with their own dogs / classes when they got home!

Platforms and filmwork

31 Oct 2016 22:48:50

While already gearing up to next year's events, it's great to go out on a high with this years.

Platform Training with Kay Attwood was a big success.  All attendees reported back that they'd learned a lot and those with working places took home some very sleepy canines. Thanks to Kay for a very enjoyable event and looking forward to her Cognitive Skills seminar already.

Thanks, too, to Sally, our "in-house" trainer for another fab filmwork seminar.  Places on these ever-popular events sell like hotcakes and rightly so.
